Despite being a well-known Hollywood actor best known for the romantic comedy Love & Basketball, Gina Prince-Bythewood is currently expanding her horizons and gravitating toward topics that are sensitive to different cultures. She contends that learning about individuals from various cultures broadens one’s understanding and knowledge.
The director is also a former basketball player and is known for films such as Love & Basketball, The Old Guard, and The Women’s King, which depict real-life events on screen.
“I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to tell The Women King’s tale. It’s quite challenging for me to work on Hollywood movies and find characters who resemble me. It is quite challenging, Prince-Bythewood tells us over a zoom call.
She is now on the proper track to change the story as a result. From my perspective, what distinguishes a film as unique is its cultural individuality. But despite that, it is still universal. The themes that are still present, such as sisterhood, faith, love, and grief, are universally relatable. because I feel like I’m learning something new when I watch movies about people from different cultures. The Woman King’s director chose Viola Davis and Thuso Mbedu to play the two main characters in the historical drama about the all-female army that defended the Kingdom of Dahomey in West Africa for centuries. The filmmaker adds, “And I feel like I’m getting drawn into universes that I didn’t know about.”
