Clint Eastwood ended up directing the drama after Steven Spielberg backed out of directing Bradley Cooper in the 2014 film American Sniper. Spielberg’s semi-autobiographical film The Fabelmans is currently in theaters.
Spielberg will also produce the upcoming Leonard Bernstein biopic Maestro, which Bradley Cooper will direct and star in. Cooper and Singer both wrote parts of it.
Cooper talked to Variety at the beginning of this year about Maestro. “I have always known that Steven Spielberg knows how much I like to conduct.” He was telling me about how he might be able to act in this biopic. But I had just finished reading A Star Is Born. I told him, “Listen, all I want to do is write and make movies.” I’ve always thought I could play a conductor, but could I also write and direct a play about it? “Will that be okay with you?”
Cooper said, “Steven has a lot of interests; he’ll just pick one and stop doing the others.” ” I think he knew that the movie wouldn’t be made for a while. He was kind enough to give it to me, and I’ve been using it for the past four and a half years.
The movie Bullitt is based on the 1963 book Mute Witness by Robert L. Fish. It is directed by Peter Yates and also stars Jacqueline Bisset, Robert Vaughn, and Robert Duvall.
